Questions answered
What does Question 3 of the ICSE English Language paper require you to write?
In part (a), the text of a notice based on given directions; in part (b), an e-mail on the same content as the notice.
Define a notice.
A notice is a short, formal written announcement displayed in a public place to inform a group of people about an event, a decision, an instruction or a change.
List the six parts of a notice in order from top to bottom.
The name of the institution, the word NOTICE, the date of issue, the heading, the body, and the name with the designation of the writer.
A notice is put up on 3 March about a quiz on 15 March. Which date goes below the word NOTICE, and why?
3 March, because the date below NOTICE is the date of issue; the date of the quiz goes in the body. Readers need the issue date to judge how current the notice is.
Why is "COMPETITION" a weak heading? Suggest a better one for an inter-school chess tournament.
It does not tell the reader which competition or what kind; a better heading is "INTER-SCHOOL CHESS TOURNAMENT".
Name the five Ws and an H, and explain why they are useful when writing a notice.
What, when, where, who, why and how. They work as a checklist so that every fact a reader needs in order to act appears in the body.
Why is the passive voice common in notices? Give one example.
It keeps the focus on the action and gives the impersonal, official tone a notice needs; for example, "Names must be submitted to the class teacher by 10 March."
What is the difference between the To and the Cc fields of an e-mail?
To holds the address of the main receiver who is expected to read and act on the message; Cc sends a copy to people who should be informed but are not expected to act.
