Questions answered

Define transport and give two reasons why it is called the lifeline of a country's economy.
Transport is the movement of people and goods from one place to another by road, rail, water or air. It is called a lifeline because it carries raw materials to factories and finished goods to markets, and because it links farms, mines and industries so that trade and specialisation become possible.
Name the four main modes of transport in India.
Roadways, railways, airways and waterways.
State three factors that affect the development of roadways.
Relief (level land makes roads cheaper), climate (heavy rain, snow and landslides damage roads) and population density with economic activity (busy regions need and can pay for more roads). Soil, river crossings, building materials and government policy are also accepted.
Give two advantages and two disadvantages of road transport.
Advantages: door-to-door service, and suitability for short distances and perishable goods. Disadvantages: high cost for heavy goods over long distances, and pollution, congestion and accidents.
What is an expressway? Name one expressway in India.
An expressway is a high-speed, access-controlled road with at least four lanes, a central divider and entry and exit only at fixed interchanges. Example: the Mumbai–Pune Expressway.
What is the Golden Quadrilateral? Give two reasons for its importance.
The Golden Quadrilateral is a network of four- and six-lane highways, about 5,846 km long, joining Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. It cuts the time and cost of moving goods between the four largest industrial and trading centres, and it links many other cities and towns along its route to these big markets.
Name the terminal points of the North-South and East-West Corridors and the place where they meet.
North-South: Srinagar to Kanyakumari. East-West: Silchar to Porbandar. They meet at Jhansi.
Why is the railway network dense in the Northern Plains but sparse in the north-eastern states?
The Northern Plains are level, fertile and densely populated, so tracks are cheap to lay and there is heavy traffic. The north-east is hilly, forested, rainy and thinly populated, so lines need tunnels and bridges and are very costly.

Mention two advantages of road transport over rail transport.

Show answer
Any two: roads are cheaper and easier to build; they are suitable for short and medium distances; they reach rural and hilly areas and connect them with towns; they provide flexible, door-to-door service; they feed other modes of transport.

ICSE 2027 sample paper · 2 marks

State two reasons why perishable products are best transported with the help of roadways over short distances.

Show answer
Any two: perishable goods reach quickly without stopping at stations along the way; they can be delivered directly to markets and consumers (door-to-door); timings are flexible; routes are flexible and can be changed as needed.

ICSE 2027 sample paper · 3 marks

Explain any three problems faced by the railways in India.

Show answer
Any three: railway tracks are difficult to lay in hilly, rugged terrain; building lines across many rivers and streams (as in the north-east) is difficult and costly; railways offer little flexibility in routes and timings and no door-to-door service; they cannot cross seas, so they cannot be used for overseas trade; they need huge capital investment.

Give one reason to explain each of the following: (a) Coastal waterways predominate over inland waterways in Peninsular India. (b) Air transport is especially beneficial for relief and evacuation purposes. (c) Families with elderly members choose railways to travel from one place to another.

Show answer
(a) Peninsular India is surrounded by sea on three sides and has a long coastline, while peninsular rivers are seasonal and flow over uneven terrain with rapids and waterfalls, making them unfit for navigation. (b) Air transport is fast and can cross physical barriers to reach remote areas, drop food, water and medicines to victims and airlift injured and stranded people. (c) Railways give a comfortable journey, especially over long distances, with facilities to sleep, stretch and move about.

Explain why the Golden Quadrilateral has contributed towards improvement of the Indian economy?

Show answer
It links the four metropolitan cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) and the ports by fast highways, reducing travel time and distance so goods and people move quickly; it has created jobs and helped small towns along the route grow into urban centres.

(a) “Roadways have an edge over railways in India.” Give reasons to support your answer. (b) Air transport is fast but not suitable for all regions and purposes in India. Give arguments in favour of the statement. (c) Which is the Inland Waterway that connects Prayagraj to Haldia?

Show answer
(a) Roads are cheaper and easier to build, even in hilly areas; they give door-to-door service, are suitable for short and medium distances and link villages with towns. (b) Air transport is very expensive, its services are limited to big cities with airports, and it cannot carry bulky goods economically. (c) National Waterway No. 1 (on the Ganga–Bhagirathi–Hooghly).

Inland water transport is more popular in Northern India as compared to Peninsular India. Give two reasons.

Show answer
1. The rivers of Northern India (Ganga, Brahmaputra) are perennial, snow-fed and have enough water throughout the year, whereas the Peninsular rivers are rain-fed and seasonal. 2. Northern rivers flow over flat plains with a gentle gradient and no waterfalls or rapids, while Peninsular rivers flow over a rocky plateau with steep gradients, rapids and waterfalls.
