Key definitions
Non-alignment is the policy of a country that refuses to join any military bloc or alliance led by a great power and keeps the freedom to judge every international issue on its merits.
Colonialism is the rule of one country over another territory and its people, usually for the economic benefit of the ruling country.
Neo-colonialism is the control of a formally independent country by a foreign power through economic pressure, loans, trade terms or political interference rather than direct rule.
Peaceful co-existence is the idea that states with different systems of government and beliefs can live together in peace, settling their differences by talks rather than by force.
Panchsheel is the name given to the five principles of peaceful co-existence that India and China agreed on in 1954 to guide relations between the two countries.
Key points
- The Cold War (late 1940s to 1991) divided the world into a Western bloc led by the USA (NATO, SEATO, CENTO) and an Eastern bloc led by the USSR (the Warsaw Pact).
- Non-alignment is the policy of not joining any military bloc while keeping the freedom to judge each issue on its merits; it is active, not neutral or isolationist.
- The Non-Aligned Movement grew through the Asian Relations Conference (1947), Bandung (1955) and Brioni (1956), and was founded at the Belgrade Summit in September 1961 with 25 members; it now has 120.
- NAM's objectives: keeping away from blocs, ending colonialism and neo-colonialism, opposing racism and apartheid, peaceful co-existence, disarmament, sovereignty of all states, economic development and a stronger United Nations.
- Panchsheel means five principles of conduct: the five principles of peaceful co-existence agreed between India and China in April 1954; only its meaning is tested.
- Nehru made non-alignment India's policy, united Asia and Africa, gave the world Panchsheel, helped found NAM, acted as a peacemaker and opposed colonialism, racism and the arms race.
- The architects of NAM: Nehru (India), Tito (Yugoslavia), Nasser (Egypt), Sukarno (Indonesia) and Nkrumah (Ghana).
