Key definitions
Internal division of a line segment is the division of the segment by a point that lies on the segment itself, between its two end points.
The section formula is the rule that gives the coordinates of the point which divides the line segment joining two given points in a given ratio.
The mid-point of a line segment is the point on the segment that divides it internally in the ratio 1 : 1.
The mid-point formula is the rule that the coordinates of the mid-point of a segment are the averages of the corresponding coordinates of its two end points.
A median of a triangle is the line segment joining a vertex of the triangle to the mid-point of the opposite side.
The centroid of a triangle is the point at which the three medians of the triangle intersect.
The centroid formula is the rule that each coordinate of the centroid of a triangle is the average of the corresponding coordinates of its three vertices.
Key points
- Internal division of a line segment is the division of the segment by a point lying between its end points; the ratio m : n means AP : PB.
- Section formula: the point dividing A(x1, y1) and B(x2, y2) in the ratio m : n is ((m x2 + n x1)/(m + n), (m y2 + n y1)/(m + n)).
- In the formula, m goes with B and n goes with A; the point lies nearer the end whose partner number is larger, so it is nearer A when m < n.
- To find an unknown ratio, write it as k : 1, solve one linear equation for k, and check with the other coordinate.
- A point on the x-axis has y = 0; a point on the y-axis has x = 0.
- Mid-point formula: ((x1 + x2)/(2), (y1 + y2)/(2)); a missing end point is (2x - x1, 2y - y1).
- The diagonals of a parallelogram have the same mid-point, which gives a missing vertex.
- The points of trisection divide a segment in the ratios 1 : 2 and 2 : 1.
- A median joins a vertex to the mid-point of the opposite side; the centroid is where the three medians meet and divides each in the ratio 2 : 1 from the vertex.
- Centroid formula: ((x1 + x2 + x3)/(3), (y1 + y2 + y3)/(3)).
