Negative Numbers and Integers

ICSE Class 6 · Mathematics · Chapter 6

What this chapter covers

Key definitions

Negative numbers are numbers that are less than zero.

Integers are the numbers ldots, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ldots made up of the counting numbers, zero and the negatives of the counting numbers.

Positive integers are the integers greater than zero.

Negative integers are the integers less than zero.

The opposite of an integer is the integer at the same distance from zero but on the other side of zero.

A number line is a straight line on which numbers are marked at equal distances, in order from left to right.

Ascending order is the arrangement of numbers from the smallest to the greatest.

Descending order is the arrangement of numbers from the greatest to the smallest.

Key points

Questions answered

Write a gain of ₹120 and a loss of ₹75 as integers.
A gain of ₹120 is +120 and a loss of ₹75 is -75.
What is the opposite of -18? What is the opposite of 0?
The opposite of -18 is 18. The opposite of 0 is 0.
Is zero a positive integer, a negative integer or neither?
Zero is neither positive nor negative.
List the integers between -4 and 3.
-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2.
Which is greater, -8 or -15? Give a reason.
-8 is greater, because it lies to the right of -15 on the number line, closer to zero.
Arrange in ascending order: 5, -2, -10, 0, 3, -6.
-10, -6, -2, 0, 3, 5.
Find the value of: (a) -7 + 3 (b) -4 + (-6) (c) 5 - 11 (d) 2 - (-9).
(a) -4 (b) -10 (c) -6 (d) 11.
A lift starts at the ground floor. It goes down 2 floors and then up 5 floors. On which floor does it stop?
0 + (-2) + 5 = 3, so the lift stops on the 3rd floor.
