Key points
- A period of transition is a long, gradual change from one way of life to another; the change from the medieval to the modern age took about four hundred years.
- Primary sources come from the time being studied; secondary sources are later accounts based on them. Historians compare both, and archives preserve old records.
- The Renaissance revived ancient learning and encouraged free thinking, helped by the printing press.
- The Reformation began in 1517 as a protest against Church practices and led to Protestant churches.
- Sea voyages, such as Vasco da Gama's arrival at Calicut in 1498, linked the continents and opened the way for Europeans to reach India.
- The Industrial Revolution replaced the domestic system with the factory system, beginning in England in the second half of the eighteenth century.
- England had coal and iron, capital, colonies, workers, transport, stable government and encouragement for inventors.
- Key inventions include the flying shuttle, spinning jenny, water frame, spinning mule, power loom, Watt's steam engine and the railway locomotive.
- The Industrial Revolution brought cheaper goods and faster transport, but also child labour, long hours, crowded towns and the loss of old crafts.
- Imperialism is the control of weaker lands by powerful countries; its causes include the need for raw materials and markets, surplus capital, rivalry and better weapons.
- In South Asia, imperialism ruined traditional crafts, drained wealth, encouraged cash crops and famines, and ended local self-rule; railways and Western education also spread new ideas that later fed the freedom struggle.
Questions answered
What is meant by a period of transition? Give one example from the chapter.
A period of transition is a stretch of time in which a society slowly moves from one way of living, thinking and working to another. The change from the medieval to the modern age in Europe, which took about four hundred years, is an example.
Classify as primary or secondary: an old coin, a history textbook, a letter written by a soldier in 1857, a documentary film made in 2015.
The coin and the soldier's letter are primary sources. The textbook and the documentary are secondary sources.
Give one strength and one weakness of a primary source.
A primary source gives a first-hand view of events and people's feelings at the time. However, its writer may be biased or may have seen only one part of what happened.
What was the Renaissance, and where did it begin?
The Renaissance was a cultural movement in Europe in which people revived ancient Greek and Roman learning and began to think more freely about art, science and human life. It began in the cities of Italy.
How did the printing press help both the Renaissance and the Reformation?
Printing made books cheaper and more common, so new ideas about art, science and religion spread quickly to many readers.
Why did European sailors look for sea routes to Asia, and which sailor reached India by sea in 1498?
They wanted to buy spices, silk and cotton cloth directly, without the costly land routes. Vasco da Gama reached Calicut in 1498.
Distinguish between the domestic system and the factory system.
In the domestic system, workers made goods by hand in their own homes and set their own hours. In the factory system, many workers ran machines in one building owned by someone else, for fixed hours and wages.
State any four reasons why the Industrial Revolution began in England.
Any four of: coal and iron deposits; capital from trade; colonies supplying raw materials and markets; a supply of workers from the countryside; good water transport; peace and stable government; encouragement to inventors.
