Exponents (Powers)
ICSE Class 8 · Mathematics · Chapter 2
What this chapter covers
- Powers and exponents
- Laws of exponents
- The zero exponent
- Negative exponents
- Laws of exponents with integral powers
- Standard form of large and small numbers
Key points
- A power such as an has a base a and an exponent n; for a positive whole number n it means n factors of a multiplied together.
- A negative base gives a positive value for an even exponent and a negative value for an odd exponent; (-3)2 = 9 but -32 = -9.
- The laws of exponents: am × an = am+n, am ÷ an = am-n, (am)n = amn, (ab)m = am bm, ((a)/(b))m = (am)/(bm).
- Any non-zero number to the power zero equals 1: a0 = 1.
- A negative exponent means a reciprocal: a-m = (1)/(am) and ((a)/(b))-m = ((b)/(a))m.
- All the laws hold for every integer exponent when the bases are non-zero.
- To simplify, write each base as a power of a prime, collect exponents with the laws, then remove negative exponents.
- If ax = ay and a is not 0, 1 or -1, then x = y.
- Standard form is k × 10n with 1 ≤ k < 10 and n an integer: positive n for large numbers, negative n for numbers less than 1.
Questions answered
Write (-3) × (-3) × (-3) × (-3) × (-3) in exponential form and find its value.
(-3)5 = -243. The odd exponent makes the value negative.
Find the value of ((-2)/(3))4.
(16)/(81).
Simplify 64 × 6-6 ÷ 6-3 and give its value.
64 - 6 + 3 = 61 = 6.
Find the value of (50 - 20) + 90.
(1 - 1) + 1 = 1.
Explain why (-7)-2 is positive although its exponent is negative.
(-7)-2 = (1)/((-7)2) = (1)/(49). A negative exponent gives a reciprocal, not a negative number, and the even exponent makes (-7)2 positive.
Find the value of ((3)/(5))-2.
((5)/(3))2 = (25)/(9).
Simplify ((2-1)3 × 16)/(4-1).
(2-1)3 = 2-3, 16 = 24 and 4-1 = 2-2, so the expression is 2-3 + 4 - (-2) = 23 = 8.
Find x if 52x - 1 = 125.
125 = 53, so 2x - 1 = 3 and x = 2.
