Study of Compounds — Nitric Acid

ICSE Class 10 · Chemistry · Chapter 10

What this chapter covers

Key definitions

Nitric acid is an oxyacid of nitrogen with the formula HNO3, in which a hydrogen atom is joined through an oxygen atom to a nitrogen atom that also carries two more oxygen atoms.

A monobasic acid is an acid that gives one hydrogen ion per molecule when it ionises in water.

Fuming nitric acid is very concentrated nitric acid, close to 98% or more, which gives off visible fumes in air because its vapour combines with moisture in the air to form tiny droplets.

Ostwald's process is the industrial method of manufacturing nitric acid by the catalytic oxidation of ammonia with air, followed by the oxidation of nitric oxide to nitrogen dioxide and the absorption of nitrogen dioxide in water in the presence of air.

An oxidising agent is a substance that gives oxygen to another substance, or removes hydrogen or electrons from it, and is itself reduced in the process.

Nascent oxygen is oxygen in the atomic state at the moment it is set free in a reaction, before its atoms join to form oxygen molecules, which makes it far more reactive than ordinary oxygen.

The brown ring test is a test for nitric acid or a nitrate in which a brown ring forms at the boundary between the test solution mixed with freshly prepared iron(II) sulphate solution and a layer of concentrated sulphuric acid poured carefully beneath it.

Key points

Questions answered

Define a monobasic acid and write the equation for the ionisation of nitric acid in water.
A monobasic acid is an acid that gives one hydrogen ion per molecule when it ionises in water. HNO3 + H2O → H3O+ + NO3-.
Write the equation for the laboratory preparation of nitric acid from sodium nitrate, stating the condition.
NaNO3 + H2SO4 → NaHSO4 + HNO3, with concentrated sulphuric acid, heated gently below 200 °C.
Give two reasons why the temperature in the laboratory preparation is kept below 200 °C.
Above 200 °C nitric acid decomposes, lowering the yield; and the normal salt potassium (or sodium) sulphate forms as a hard crust that sticks to the retort and may crack it.
Why is the apparatus for preparing nitric acid made entirely of glass?
Nitric acid vapour is corrosive and attacks rubber and cork, so these would be damaged and would contaminate the acid.
Why is concentrated hydrochloric acid not used in place of concentrated sulphuric acid in the laboratory preparation?
Hydrochloric acid is volatile, so it would distil over with the nitric acid and contaminate it; the method depends on the displacing acid being non-volatile.
Why does laboratory nitric acid often look yellow, and how can the colour be removed?
Light or heat decomposes some of the acid into nitrogen dioxide, which dissolves in it and colours it yellow. Bubbling dry air or carbon dioxide through the warm acid, or adding water, removes the colour.
Write the equations, with conditions, for the three stages of Ostwald's process.
4NH3 + 5O2 → 4NO + 6H2O over platinum gauze at about 800 °C, ammonia and air in the ratio 1 : 10; 2NO + O2 → 2NO2 on cooling to about 50 °C; 4NO2 + 2H2O + O2 → 4HNO3 in the absorption tower.
Why is no outside heating needed once the catalytic oxidation of ammonia has started?
The reaction is exothermic, and the heat it releases keeps the platinum gauze at the required temperature.

Write balanced chemical equations for the following: (a) Chlorination of chloroform in the presence of diffused sunlight. (b) Hydrated aluminium oxide is treated with caustic soda. (c) Zinc oxide is treated with caustic alkali. (d) Copper reacts with cold dilute nitric acid. (e) Laboratory preparation of nitric acid using sodium nitrate.

Show answer
(a) CHCl₃ + Cl₂ → CCl₄ + HCl (diffused sunlight) (b) Al₂O₃·2H₂O + 2NaOH → 2NaAlO₂ + 3H₂O (c) ZnO + 2NaOH → Na₂ZnO₂ + H₂O (d) 3Cu + 8HNO₃ → 3Cu(NO₃)₂ + 4H₂O + 2NO (e) NaNO₃ + H₂SO₄ → NaHSO₄ + HNO₃ (below 200 °C)

Study the reaction given below and answer the questions that follow: NaNO₃ + H₂SO₄ (Conc.) ⟶ NaHSO₄ + HNO₃ (< 200°C) (a) Give one reason for maintaining the temperature below 200°C. (b) Why is concentrated Sulphuric acid used in the above reaction?

Show answer
(a) At higher temperatures nitric acid decomposes (into NO₂, O₂ and water); also Na₂SO₄ would form, which sticks to the glass as a hard crust and is difficult to remove. (Any one.) (b) Concentrated sulphuric acid is a non-volatile acid (high boiling point), so it displaces the more volatile nitric acid from its salt; the nitric acid distils over.

Identify the reactant and write the balanced equation for the following: Nitric acid reacts with compound Q to give a salt Calcium nitrate, water and carbon dioxide.

Show answer
Q is calcium carbonate (or calcium bicarbonate). CaCO₃ + 2HNO₃ → Ca(NO₃)₂ + H₂O + CO₂ or Ca(HCO₃)₂ + 2HNO₃ → Ca(NO₃)₂ + 2H₂O + 2CO₂

Give reasons for the following: (a) Nitric acid does not normally liberate hydrogen gas when it reacts with active metals. (b) Silver-plated cutlery is not considered as pure silver.

Show answer
(a) Nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent; it oxidises the hydrogen formed to water, so hydrogen gas is not liberated (except with Mg and Mn and very dilute acid). (b) Only its surface is a thin coating of silver deposited by electroplating; the body of the cutlery is another (cheaper) metal.

Anil is a laboratory assistant in a college. He prepared nitric acid but stored it in a transparent container exposed to sunlight. After a few days, brown fumes were observed in the container and the acid turned slightly yellowish in colour. (a) What was the error made by Anil while storing the acid? (b) Why were brown fumes observed in the container? (c) How can the yellowish tinge in the acid be removed?

Show answer
(a) He stored it in a transparent container in sunlight; nitric acid should be stored in a dark (amber) coloured bottle away from light. (b) Nitric acid decomposes in sunlight to give reddish-brown nitrogen dioxide: 4HNO₃ ⟶ 4NO₂ + 2H₂O + O₂ (c) By bubbling air (or oxygen) through the warm acid, or by adding water, which converts the dissolved NO₂ back to nitric acid: 4NO₂ + 2H₂O + O₂ ⟶ 4HNO₃
