Key definitions
Sulphuric acid is an oxyacid of sulphur with the formula H2SO4, in which a sulphur atom is joined to four oxygen atoms, two of which also carry a hydrogen atom each.
The Contact process is the industrial method of manufacturing sulphuric acid in which sulphur dioxide is catalytically oxidised to sulphur trioxide, which is then absorbed in concentrated sulphuric acid and diluted.
Oleum is the thick, fuming liquid formed when sulphur trioxide dissolves in concentrated sulphuric acid, also called fuming sulphuric acid or pyrosulphuric acid, with the formula H2S2O7.
The basicity of an acid is the number of hydrogen ions that one molecule of the acid can give when it ionises in water.
A dibasic acid is an acid that gives two hydrogen ions per molecule when it ionises in water, and so can form two kinds of salt with a base.
A normal salt is a salt formed when all the replaceable hydrogen ions of an acid are replaced by a metal or ammonium ion.
An acid salt is a salt formed when only some of the replaceable hydrogen ions of an acid are replaced by a metal or ammonium ion, so that it still contains replaceable hydrogen.
A dehydrating agent is a substance that removes the elements of water, hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio 2 : 1, from a compound, or removes the water of crystallisation from a hydrated salt.
A drying agent is a substance that absorbs moisture from another substance, such as a gas, without changing that substance chemically.
Sugar charcoal is the black, porous carbon left behind when cane sugar is dehydrated by concentrated sulphuric acid.
A volatile acid is an acid that has a low boiling point and turns into vapour easily on warming.
A non-volatile acid is an acid that has a high boiling point and does not readily turn into vapour on heating.
Key points
- Sulphuric acid, H2SO4, is a dense, oily, colourless liquid that boils at about 338 °C; it is diluted by adding the acid to water, never water to the acid.
- Contact process: S + O2 → SO2; 2SO2 + O2 rightleftharpoons 2SO3 over V2O5 at 450–500 °C and 1–2 atm; SO3 + H2SO4 → H2S2O7 (oleum); H2S2O7 + H2O → 2H2SO4.
- Sulphur trioxide is absorbed in concentrated sulphuric acid, not water, to avoid a dense acid mist.
- Dilute sulphuric acid is a strong acid: it gives hydrogen with active metals, a salt and water with oxides and hydroxides, CO2 with carbonates and hydrogen carbonates, SO2 with sulphites and hydrogen sulphites, and H2S with sulphides.
- Calcium carbonate stops reacting with dilute sulphuric acid because sparingly soluble calcium sulphate coats it.
- Sulphuric acid is dibasic: it forms acid salts (NaHSO4) and normal salts (Na2SO4).
- Hot concentrated sulphuric acid is an oxidising agent: C + 2H2SO4 → CO2 + 2SO2 + 2H2O and S + 2H2SO4 → 3SO2 + 2H2O.
- Concentrated sulphuric acid is a dehydrating agent: it chars sugar to carbon and turns blue copper(II) sulphate crystals white; it also dries gases other than ammonia.
- Being non-volatile, it displaces volatile acids from their salts: HCl from NaCl or KCl, and HNO3 from NaNO3 or KNO3, below 200 °C.
- Test: dilute sulphuric acid gives a white precipitate of barium sulphate with barium chloride solution, insoluble in dilute hydrochloric or nitric acid.
